What makes the price go up

The number of pages matters less than you think. What matters is what the site has to do. Online ordering costs more. Booking costs more. A full store costs more. Photos and writing cost money too. People forget that part, and good content takes real work to produce. That is why a simple site sits near the low end and a busy one sits higher.

Other costs to budget for

The build is not the only cost. These come from other companies, whoever builds your site. The companies named are examples, not recommendations, and the prices are what their pages showed in October 2026. Check the current pages before you budget.

  1. Domain name: often about $10 to $25 a year for a .com (our estimate). It renews every year, and a free first-year domain renews at the standard rate.
  2. Hosting: included in builder plans. For a custom site, it varies by host and by how much care is included. Ask what updates, backups and support cost each year.
  3. Business email: Google Workspace Starter listed $7 per user a month on a yearly plan. Plan for one address per person who needs one.
  4. Photos: the cost varies, so get a quote from a local photographer. Real photos of your place, team and work beat stock photos.
  5. Online booking: Square Appointments listed a free plan, and $49 or $149 a month per location for paid plans. Card fees are extra, from 2.9% plus 30 cents online on paid plans.
  6. Online store: Shopify Basic listed $29 a month on a yearly plan, or $39 paid monthly. Card fees are extra. Shopify lists card rates from 2.9% plus 30 cents on Basic. Stripe, a payment service a custom site can use, lists 2.9% plus 30 cents per domestic card payment.

Questions to ask before you accept any quote

Ask every designer the same questions, ours included, and get the answers in writing. Then you are comparing like with like.

  1. What exactly is included: how many pages, which features, the writing, the photos, and how many rounds of changes?
  2. What is not included, and what would each of those cost?
  3. Who owns the domain, the design, the code and the content once the site is paid for?
  4. Where will the site be hosted, what does that cost each year, and who handles updates, backups and HTTPS?
  5. What will I pay every year after launch: domain, hosting, email, apps or plugins, and booking or store fees?
  6. How long will it take, and what do you need from me, by when?
  7. How are payments split, and what happens if the project stops halfway?
